License drive also encouraging dog owners to vaccinate dogs

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has issued about 2,500 dog licenses in the past five months which is a record-breaking number for the corporation. The senior municipal veterinary officer, Dr. DC Tiwari said that the corporation issued only about 560 dog licenses during the same period last year while the total license issued in that year was 2,296 which resulted in a collection of revenue amounting to about Rs 4.6 lakh. However the MCD has already issued about 2,500 dog licenses in the first five months of this financial year collecting over Rs five lakh, said Tiwari. He said that the online initiative of registering for a dog license has helped the MCD to reach the maximum number of dog owners as it saves time and effort for dog owners and the staff here. Besides this, the MCD teams have also started the inspection of pet dog licenses across the city in the early morning and evenings when people take their dogs for a walk. The team members have commenced going door to door to check for dog licenses too, said Tiwari.

He said that teams are warning the pet owners to apply for a dog license within three days and get it within a week of applying from the corporation. Many have also been penalized from Rs 500 to Rs 5,000 for not complying with the rules. He said, “Dog licenses are not just about keeping a tab on the number of pet dogs across the city but it also encourages dog owners to vaccinate their dogs regularly against the diseases like rabies. Most of the dog owners who apply for the dog license in the MCD vaccinate their dogs only days before the application as it is a prerequisite to get the license issued from the corporation. We have found that many owners have not vaccinated their dogs even once before applying for a license. This is the reason we have started an awareness campaign and started penalizing to ensure the compliance of norms by the owners.”

He added that considering the current growth in the dog license application numbers, the corporation would possibly collect at least Rs 10 lakh by the end of this financial year.
