In order to provide relief to the underprivileged, homeless and other citizens during the harsh winter nights, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has recently started setting up bonfires and woodstoves in various locations across the city every night. Informing about this, the store in-charge at the MCD Mahesh Kumar informed that the concept of bonfires in different public places of Dehradun has been implemented for several years to assist both the homeless people and travellers facing the winter chill at night. This year, the bonfire initiative began on December 9 and will continue till February 15. He further informed that during the initial phase of the initiative, the corporation set up bonfires at 16 locations, which include ISBT, Niranjanpur, Survey Chowk, Doon Hospital Chowk, Kanak Chowk, Railway Station, Prince Chowk, Ghantaghar, Dilaram Chowk, Mussoorie Diversion, Sai Temple and Rajpur, as well as several Rain Baseras, as needed.

Kumar further informed that the locations for setting up the bonfires may vary depending on the requirement. It is anticipated that during the peak winter time, which occurs at the end of December and throughout January, they will establish bonfires at 50 different sites in Dehradun. He said that approximately 40 to 50 personnel have been consistently engaged in lighting up bonfires at the designated locations. This initiative has been undertaken by the MCD for many years and will continue in the future. The primary aim of this initiative is to provide warmth and protection for the homeless, travellers and others during the cold winter nights, he added.
