The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is likely to commence the work of establishing a biogas power plant within two months. The corporation has been talking about setting up a biogas plant at its Gau Sadan premises in Shankarpur for over a year now but nothing concrete happened at the ground level.

The local dairy owners dumping cow dung in drains, various stretches of Rispana river and in open public areas is one of the prominent sanitation issues in Dehradun and many councillors have even complained about it to the senior MCD officials on various occasions. They have stated that despite multiple warnings and charging penalties, the dairy owners continue to dispose of cow dung in public places which causes various issues to locals living nearby. However, the corporation has already sent a proposal to the government and is in talks with various public and private agencies to collaborate on the biogas plant project.

According to the municipal commissioner Manuj Goyal, the corporation has made a plan for setting up a plant to process 50 tonnes of waste (cow dung and biodegradable garbage) at a time. He said that the corporation is aware of the issues caused by untreated cow dung and garbage across the city and this initiative will help in their proper disposal while producing energy and manure.

The commissioner said that the corporation Is in touch with many government and private agencies and the plant might be operated under  public-private partnership (PPP) mode but nothing has been finalised yet. He said that if everything goes as per the plan, the MCD will commence the work of establishing a biogas power plant within two months which will take at least six to eight months to be finished. He said that with the operation of this plant, the disposal of wet biodegradable waste will be easy which constitutes a big part of the garbage of the city and is the main cause of the stinking smell in the solid waste management and recycling plant at Sheeshambada.
