MCD not to extend period of 20% rebate on property tax

The period of 20 per cent rebate on property tax which is due to end on February 28 will not be extended further by the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD). The corporation has been extending the rebate throughout the year in order to encourage the taxpayers but as per the mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’, it would not be extended this time due to the model code of conduct (MCC) imposed in the state. Revenue generated from the property tax collection is one of the main sources of income of the corporation but the tax section has collected only about Rs 28 crore in the current financial year so far despite the set target to collect Rs 50 crore. However the pending property tax from government buildings can easily help MCD to achieve the said target. The corporation is yet to receive about Rs 15 crore of property tax from several government, non-government and aided properties. Only four buildings- Forest Research Institute (FRI), Survey of India, Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and State Infrastructure and Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand Limited (SIIDCUL), owe about Rs 10 crore of property tax to the corporation which can help the MCD to achieve its target. The municipal commissioner Abhishek Ruhela informed that so far, the MCD has no plans to extend the final date of the rebate but the tax section will organise some camps as per the councillors requests and will remain open on Sunday for tax submission.
