The Dehradun municipal commissioner Manuj Goyal has directed cable operators and telecommunication companies to remove entangled cables and wires from all electricity poles soon. He held a meeting with representatives of various service provider companies in the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD). Representatives of Reliance Jio, Sky Net, Dehradun Index Solutions, Airtel, BSNL and ITDA among others attended the meeting. Goyal said that several entangled cable wires are left hanging on electricity poles, most of which are from telecom and cable television providers. These companies often do not even remove old and damaged wires before installing new ones which can potentially be dangerous to many. He also said that at times it becomes very difficult for an electrician to carry out his work properly, especially during an emergency, due to the web of entangled wires. It also puts the lives of workers at risk during the lopping of trees. The risk increases during monsoons, especially if these wires fall on the ground due to the wind or storms. He added that the untangled wires also give an aesthetic look to the city. He asked the officials of Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) to coordinate with agencies concerned to ensure that the cables are installed systematically within the month of September. He also asked the companies to improve the situation and remove all the unnecessary wires and cables from all electricity poles.
If officials fail to do so in the stipulated time, MCD will cut down all these cables. He said that if the MCD team has to remove these cables, it will legally recover hefty fines from the companies besides confiscating all cables. “We expect the whole work to be completed within a month without causing any inconvenience to the locals. However if authorities concerned fail, MCD will take legal action against them,” added Goyal.
