The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) imposed penalties on 17 dairy owners on Friday after getting several complaints against them by locals. This is the first time that so many dairy operators have been penalised by the corporation in a single day, the chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna said. He said that with the onset of summer, the dairies, especially those which operate in the residential areas, create a nuisance for the locals as many of them dump animal waste in the drains and public places. They also fail to properly dispose of the garbage generated in their dairies. They cause several sanitation issues across the city like dumping cow dung in drains, in various stretches of Rispana River and open public areas. The city also faces issues like waterlogging during monsoon besides potential health risks and environmental concerns like methane emission due to improper disposal of cow dung in large quantities by big dairies. This can also lead to health hazards, especially in summer. Considering all these factors, a sanitation team led by Khanna conducted inspections of several dairies on Friday that started at 7 AM. The team found irregularities in 17 dairies of Nehrugram, Negi Road, Guru Road, Patelnagar and Raipur Khala. Khanna said that the MCD imposed penalties on these dairies ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 10,000 and collected a total revenue of Rs 79,000. He said that the corporation warned the offenders to not dump garbage and cow dung against the rules. If they are caught again, the MCD will impose a penalty of a hefty amount and will take legal action against them. The sanitation team will continue to conduct such inspections across the city. Those who have complaints about dairy operators in any particular area can also approach the MCD, he added.
