The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has received over 60 nominations under the Swacchata Champions campaign which was launched by mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ on January 10. The campaign is divided into six categories which include houses, commercial establishments, colleges, institutes, government offices and other establishments where people who take initiatives for better waste management can register themselves under the campaign. The mayor said that such people contribute to keeping their city clean and must be felicitated that will inspire others too. He said that MCD teams have also been conducting physical verification of the premises of the respective applicant to verify the details provided by them as nominees to ensure no fake claims are being entertained by the corporation. ‘Gama’ said that MCD has witnessed such nominees who segregate the waste generated in their society thoroughly making it a zero-waste apartment building. Some are also making various items and jewellery from waste too. Such stories will inspire people to do in their daily life too, added the mayor. He said that the corporation is doing various things to promote proper waste management practices in the city but without the contribution of local citizens, the dream of ‘Swachh Doon Sundar Doon’ cannot be achieved. In order to encourage those who are doing their best at their own level for waste management, the MCD started this campaign to mark and honour such local people. He said that the corporation will felicitate and honour all the selected nominees on January 23.
