MCD takes action against illegal fish pond breeding banned species

The Dehradun mayor Saurabh Thapliyal ordered the closure of a pond that was  being used for breeding of banned fish species Thai Magur in Chandernagar area. A Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) team led by the mayor and municipal commissioner Namami Bansal on Thursday conducted a surprise inspection on an illegally operated fish pond breeding the banned fish species Thai Magur in Dehradun.

The team found the pond in Chandernagar to be functioning without authorisation. The officials discovered that the pond operators were breeding Thai Magur, a catfish species banned in India due to its harmful impact on the aquatic ecosystem. The mayor immediately ordered the closure of the pond and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000.

Bansal informed that the inspection was carried out in coordination with the Fisheries department. The mayor issued orders to shut down the pond on the spot. The action aimed to prevent further environmental damage and enforce the ban on restricted fish species within municipal limits, the commissioner said.
