The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will soon start the process of declaring several roads public to ensure their proper development. The Dehradun municipal commissioner Manuj Goyal said that due to consistent development and construction work in the city, many roads have been created which have not been declared as public roads. This causes problems for the department concerned in maintaining these roads which in turn causes inconvenience to the common people. He said that the officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) also informed him that they have prepared proposals for the construction and maintenance of many roads but the ownership status of the roads is not clear as they are yet to be declared as public roads.
Due to this, the PWD is facing issues in carrying out work on such roads. He said that PWD has identified 208 private roads in 10 wards and made their list available to the corporation. With all these roads becoming public, 35.56 kilometres of roads will be constructed by the department. Goyal said that he has instructed the officials to mark the roads and take action to declare them as public roads. He said that before declaring a road as a public road, MCD will seek objections from the public by pasting a notice on a part of the road and anybody can register their objection within a month.
If the MCD receives no objection regarding a road, it will be declared a public road. In case any objection is received regarding any road, action will be taken to declare that road as a public road after resolving the issue, said the municipal commissioner. He said that due to the roads not being declared public, government departments concerned including MCD are unable to carry out development work on these roads. Due to this, the departments and MCD have to bear the brunt of public anger. After declaring the roads public, it will be possible to carry out development work at these places so that the public can benefit from the facilities of paved roads, sewer lines and street lights, among others.
