MCD to impose penalties for garbage dumping in public places

Monday, 31 January 2022 | PNS | Dehradun

In an attempt to minimise the accumulation of garbage in roadside areas to attain maximum scores in the ongoing Swachh Survekshan 2022 (SS22), the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has decided to impose penalties on those who dispose of garbage in open areas. Teams from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) are expected to arrive in Dehradun by February 28 to inspect various aspects of sanitation of the city and MCD is gearing up to attain maximum scores in the same.

Recently, the municipal commissioner Abhishek Ruhela along with the chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna and health inspectors inspected several locations across the city to check sanitation condition of roads and public toilets. The commissioner was furious over the conditions of some public toilets maintained by the third party. He has issued orders to the parties concerned to improve the conditions of toilets from Monday. The chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna said that the corporation has established public toilets in over 30 different locations across the city and since availability and cleanliness of public toilets is among the crucial parts of the cleanliness survey SS22, MCD will ensure proper facilities there, not for just now but throughout the year. He said that the sanitation team will once again check the conditions of these toilets on Monday and action will be taken against those who fail to comply with the commissioner’s orders.

Talking about the garbage piling up in various roadside areas of the city, the officer said that the corporation is making all efforts to tackle the issue but some locals continue to litter public places. There are certain locations here where roadside garbage accumulation issue is more persistent so considering this, we have decided to penalise locals who throw garbage there, stated Khanna. He said, “MCD is taking steps to make the city garbage-free and with the help of locals and sanitation team, we will penalise such people who continue to make the city dirty. Initially, our sanitation inspectors will impose penalties on those throwing garbage in open areas in certain locations. Locals can also complain about such people to MCD. We will also take action against them under relevant acts if they continue to dump trash in public places despite warnings.” Khanna added, “Many people are also regularly informing the sanitation teams about the sanitation issues in their respective areas and we are resolving them immediately too. I appeal to everyone to inform us if they find any such issue across the city to help in making Dehradun garbage-free.”
