MCD to install CCTV cameras to deter dumping of garbage in open spaces

Monday, 08 JULY 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

In view of increasing dumping of garbage in the open areas across the city, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is planning to install CCTV cameras at vulnerable spots to take action against offenders. Earlier this year, the corporation had approached the Dehradun Smart City Limited (DSCL) to install 20 CCTV cameras at the spots to monitor the offenders who dump garbage at the spots from where MCD had removed garbage bins. The corporation had initially approached DSCL for installation of CCTV cameras which could be monitored in their command centre. However, DSCL asked for Rs 66 lakh from the corporation to carry out the CCTV camera installation works, which was not within the MCD’s budget, as per the officials. The corporation made another proposal to DSCL a few weeks ago but the requested amount remained the same. As a result, the MCD has decided to carry out the installation of the cameras on its own. The need for installation of CCTV cameras has grown in recent months, especially after several individuals were caught illegally dumping garbage in the open, the Rispana river and vacant plots. The practice of dumping garbage in open areas and burning it has become increasingly common in various parts of the city. To make the city dustbin-free, the MCD removed garbage bins from several areas last year. However, irregular and inefficient door-to-door garbage collection services are also contributing to dumping in public areas. Since people can no longer dispose of garbage in the bins which were there earlier, they have resorted to dumping it on the ground wherever they can find a place due to the irregular collection service. The Dehradun municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar said that the corporation is aware of the garbage dumping in open areas. Due to this, the MCD is planning to install CCTV cameras on its own and its corresponding centre will be opened on the MCD premises for monitoring. “I believe this will be more economically feasible for us than the amount demanded by DSCL. We have surveyed the locations and will soon start work on this plan,” he said.
