The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will install five waste compactor machines in two garbage collection stations which are located in the Kargi and Dhoran Khas areas for effective handling of waste. These machines work on a hydraulically operated garbage compression system which reduces the volume of garbage and turns it into a highly compressed form of mixed waste which will make it easier to transport it to solid waste management and recycling plant, said the municipal commissioner Manuj Goyal.
At present, garbage is brought to the transfer stations via small vehicles and dumped into the ground where heaps of garbage can be seen often. After that, it is filled in big vehicles with the help of bulldozers to send them to the waste management plant. The dumping of garbage in open fields and then its loading to transfer it to the plant causes several issues like air pollution among others. The installation of these machines is expected to make the process quite easier and time efficient.
The commissioner said that the garbage collected by sanitation workers will be directly put into these compactor machines by small vehicles in the stations. After that, the compressed garbage will be directly transferred to a closed container via machines which will be sent to the plant for further processing. The whole process will occur within three hours after garbage reaches the garbage stations, added Goyal. He said that the corporation has proposed to install two compactor machines at Dhoran Khas and three at Kargi. The team has sent a detailed project report to the state administration for approval. He said that after getting approval, the whole work will be completed in six to eight months.
