MCD to mandate disposal of only segregated garbage by bulk waste generators

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is planning to focus on adapting decentralized waste processing management in order to encourage waste management at source by big apartment buildings and non-residential establishments under the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2016. It would be now mandatory for bulk waste generators like resident welfare associations (RWAs), apartment building residents and commercial establishments like hotels and restaurants to dispose of segregated garbage in garbage collection vehicles only.
The Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ has called up a meeting on Tuesday to communicate this plan with RWAs, prominent apartment building managers and representatives from commercial establishments. Heaps of garbage accumulated in several roadside areas is now a fairly common sight in Dehradun. Despite several claims of the corporation to run several sanitation campaigns and deploying sanitation workers to keep the streets clean, garbage disposal continues to be a prominent cleanliness issue in the city.
The officials said that the MCD is now preparing to focus on decentralised waste processing as per which, waste would be segregated and processed by bulk waste generators like residential building premises, RWAs and commercial establishments at or near its source of generation. It saves time and resources of the corporation to not transport the garbage over long distances to be first dumped into garbage transfer stations and then eventually transport it to get processed at the waste management plant, said the officials. According to them, the MCD will initially focus on raising awareness among these establishments about waste segregation only.
The mayor has called a meeting on Tuesday to hold a discussion about the matter with the representatives of the said residential and non-residential establishments along with brand ambassadors of MCD. He will also launch a bulk waste generator application which would help in tracking garbage processing by these premises, said the officials.
