MCD to send bills to 150 property tax defaulters

Monday, 22 April 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will send bills to about 150 non-residential property tax defaulters who have failed to deposit property tax in past years. If the taxpayers do not deposit tax within 15 days of issuing the bills, the corporation will issue final notices to the defaulters. The tax section will take legal action to recover the tax along with the hefty penalty as per the norms if the defaulters fail to pay the taxes within the stipulated time, the municipal tax superintendent Poonam Rawat said. These defaulters include big government and aided education institutions, government bodies and apartment buildings.

The corporation collected only Rs three crore less than its initial target of collecting Rs 60 crore in the financial year 2023- 24. Though the MCD broke last year’s record of collecting maximum property tax collection by a municipal body in the State, it still failed the set target by the municipal commissioner.

To ensure that MCD collects taxes from maximum non-residential property tax defaulters, the tax section has started the process of sending the bill. It is being speculated that elections of municipal bodies will be held in the State after the formation of the new government in the Centre. Since it can also affect tax collection to some extent, MCD aims to maximise tax collection in the first few months of the new financial year.  The tax superintendent said that MCD has prepared a list of about 150 defaulters that include non- residential properties and will start sending bills from this week, she added.
