The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will establish a construction and demolition debris waste management facility in the city. It will recycle construction waste into reusable building material like cement, blocks and bricks. The MCD will be the first corporation in the State to establish such a set up for the disposal of construction and demolition debris in a scientific way, the Dehradun chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna said. The efficient disposal of construction and demolition debris waste is one of the major challenges of the corporation. There is always some kind of construction work going on in the city like demolition and construction of roads, houses, apartment buildings and commercial buildings, among others. The debris generated during construction and demolition often lies around for several days which causes air pollution as the dust from debris remains in the air for months and can cause health issues.
Khanna informed that on average, Dehradun generates about 30 to 40 metric tonnes of construction and demolition debris waste daily. The quantity often increases during summer when people tend to carry out more construction work. Considering this, the MCD is planning to construct this facility on about four acres of land using scientific methods. The facility will have sprinklers besides other equipment to ensure the dust particles do not cause air pollution. It will be constructed as per the expert’s plan to ensure efficient disposal of debris without severely affecting the environment. The corporation has also marked the land to set up the facility. The plant will be set up on public private partnership mode, Khanna said. However, he added that it will take at least four to six months to start this project due to the ensuing Lok Sabha elections and the civic bodies elections expected to be held later.
