The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has planned to start garbage collection in market areas of the city at night to ensure proper disposal of bulk waste. The corporation is presently providing this service in Paltan Bazaar and Rajpur Road areas for the past few weeks where garbage collection vehicles reach by 10 PM to collect the garbage, said the chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna.
He said that the corporation has started this garbage collection service at night as most of the commercial establishments are open throughout the day and till late evening which leads to massive bulk waste accumulation. Many times, such waste is thrown into roadside areas or garbage bins which causes a nuisance to the public and might also cause a health hazard in the long term. The waste is picked by MCD the next day but this practice remains quite prevalent among people in the city. To ensure such waste gets disposed of properly, garbage collection service has been commenced at night for commercial establishments, said Khanna. He said that presently four to five vehicles are sent to Paltan Bazaar and Rajpur Road areas for garbage collection by 10 PM. He said, “These vehicles collect about 10 metric tonnes of garbage every night from these two areas at present. The shopkeepers and eateries owners have been directed to dispose of only segregated garbage. It must not be too difficult for them as shops usually generate more quantity of dry waste and eateries generate wet organic waste.”
Khanna said that the corporation will soon introduce this service in all market areas of all wards to ensure bulk waste is disposed of and processed as per the rules to improve the level of sanitation in the city. The president of Doon Valley Mahanagar Udyog Vyapar Mandal (DVMUVM) Pankaj Masson also asked all shopkeepers to dispose of their garbage only via garbage collection vehicles of the MCD.
