MCD warns of action against bulk waste generators

Monday, 20 March 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The Dehradun municipal commissioner Manuj Goyal said that action would be taken against bulk waste generators (BWGs) who fail to submit their work action plan for waste segregation and disposal of their waste by Monday as per his order issued on February 20 last month. The commissioner had asked BWGs on February 20 to submit their action plan by March 20 to dispose of the garbage to ensure they are adhering to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 failing which the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will start imposing fine as per the rules.

There are over 3,000 establishments like resident welfare associations (RWAs), apartment buildings and other commercial establishments that generate waste in bulk on a daily basis which forms a big percentage of daily waste generated in the city, as per the commissioner. Goyal has also started conducting inspections of apartment buildings from Saturday to check rules are being followed by BWGs. He inspected two prominent apartment buildings on Saturday located on Sahastradhara Road and found no proper ways to dispose of the waste generated by people living there. He directed them to ensure they present a plan regarding its disposal by Monday in MCD and dispose of the waste as per SWM rules.

He also conducted a meeting with representatives of several RWAs, restaurants, hotels, shopping malls and big stores among others to raise awareness among them regarding segregation and disposal of bulk waste. The corporation decided to impose penalties on BWGs following the failure of its plan to engage BWGs with the corporation for waste segregation and disposal through registration in the Bulk Waste Generator App. The commissioner said that MCD would take strict action against those establishments this week if they fail to comply with SWM rules.
