Dinesh Khanna, a draftsman at the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD), has transformed a section of his office into a vibrant green space that has captivated visitors and earned him praise from senior officials. Khanna, who has been nurturing plants at his home for years, extended his passion to the workplace a few months ago. His innovative approach involves repurposing discarded single-use plastics to grow plants. “I noticed that after meetings of senior officials at MCD, small plastic water bottles were often thrown away. I started collecting them, cutting or modifying them as planters and planting small saplings,” Khanna said.
He shared that initially, he began this initiative within his office, later expanding it to areas outside. He stated that although some colleagues questioned his efforts initially, attitudes gradually shifted. “Now, I see people watering these plants occasionally. It feels good to see the change,” he said. Khanna’s green initiative has inspired many colleagues and visitors. “Several people have asked me how I created this space. I enjoy sharing the method and it feels rewarding when they set up small green corners of their own,” he said proudly.
Khanna’s grassroots effort highlights the potential of individual actions to promote sustainability and transform spaces, even in professional settings.
