The Municipal Corporation of Haridwar (MCH) seized 60 kilogrammes of plastic cans from the ghats in the Har Ki Paidi area, which are used by pilgrims to carry holy Ganga water. The officials informed that the sanitation team conducted an inspection on several ghats in the Har Ki Paidi area including Mahila Ghat from Upper Road, Ghantaghar area, Subhash Ghat, Kangra Ghat and several others. Most of the vendors could be seen with plastic cans of various sizes from the route and stairs leading to the ghats. The officials seized 60 kilogrammes of plastic cans and imposed challans to ensure vendors do not sell them again. The authorities also removed vendors encroaching the public areas.
The officials stated that such cans cannot be sold near ghats as per the norms of the National Green Tribunal (NGT). Such vendors often occupy a big area on roads, ghats and ghats’s stairs that leads to inconvenience to pilgrims and others. This often leads to dirty ghats and garbage accumulating in the area which also leads to water pollution. The officials said that the inspection was conducted on Monday as part of the MCH’s drive to make the ghats of the city encroachment free and not allow any activities that can cause trouble to pilgrims.
