The Municipal Corporation of Haridwar (MCH) has commenced the installation of bio-composting machines on the premises of bulk waste generators (BWGs) of the city. This is to ensure that these establishments dispose of their daily wet organic waste in their respective premises which will save considerable time and resources of the corporation in carrying and disposing of the waste.
The corporation has identified 164 BWGs in the city including mainly Dharamshalas, Ashrams, restaurants and hotels that mostly generate wet organic waste like leftover food and other organic waste. The successful installation of bio-composting machines in these establishments is expected to reduce garbage generation at least by 30 per cent every month, said the municipal commissioner of Haridwar Dayanand Saraswati.
The city presently generates about 200 metric tonnes of garbage on a daily basis which goes up to 500 metric tonnes on special occasions. Depending on the situation and occasion, the successful operation of these bio-composting machines is expected to reduce the garbage generation by 30 to 70 per cent. These machines are of 1,100 kilogrammes capacity that will convert the waste into compost in two to three weeks which can be used or sold by the management of the respective bodies.
The commissioner said that since there is a good market for compost in Haridwar, the bodies are free to either sell them as per their will or use them on their own. He said that bio-composting machines have already been installed in five BWGs premises. “We have identified 164 BWGs where bio-composting machines are expected to be installed within the next six months. We have already received 45 machines for installation. According to our estimation, all these BWGs will be converting their wet organic waste into compost before the commencement of the next Char Dham Yatra. It will bring a drastic change in the waste management system of the city,” added Saraswati.
