Sanitation workers dispose of three days of accumulated garbage in a day: commissioner

The municipal commissioner of Haridwar, Dayanand Saraswati terminated the contract with Casa Green company on Thursday, which managed the door-to-door garbage collection in the city, after it failed to resume work after a strike. The sanitation team and workers of the Municipal Corporation of Haridwar (MCH) collected about 660 metric tonnes of garbage accumulated in various parts of the city on Thursday as the city had turned into a garbage dump due to the strike.

The corporation used all of its resources including manual and machinery to collect and dispose of the garbage besides cleaning drains. The commissioner told The Pioneer that the company went on a strike against the corporation demanding payment of its wages and other facilities due to which door-to-door garbage collection service remained suspended and waste was littered in various parts of the city. He said that the corporation talked to the company’s representatives about their issues and fulfilled most of their demands but despite that, they did not resume garbage collection service across the city in the past three days which severely affected the sanitation conditions.

“Considering the company’s incompetent behaviour, the MCH has terminated the contract. In the early morning, I along with the sanitation team started collection and disposal of the garbage that had accumulated here in the past three days. The team cleaned and disposed of nearly 660 metric tonnes of garbage from all wards of the city till late on Thursday evening,” claimed Saraswati. He said that the corporation is dedicated to providing the best sanitation services in the city and will not tolerate any act that tries to undermine its hard work.
