The Municipal Corporation of Haridwar (MCH) will impose penalties for open defecation and on the use of banned plastic products during the Kanwad Yatra which will commence on Monday. The corporation has formed a special team that includes a Tehsildar and two supervisors to take action against such violations, the Haridwar municipal commissioner Varun Chaudhary said. Talking about arrangements regarding Kanwad Yatra, he stated that the MCH will deploy 1,000 sanitation workers to ensure proper cleanliness in ghats and public places. Besides this, 1,000 seater mobile toilets will also be installed in eight prominent areas of the city. He said that the corporation is also working to set up some temporary toilets in certain areas whose work will be completed this weekend. “The city has been divided into seven zones with sanitation inspectors assigned to each for effective management. Sanitation workers will be on duty round the clock in three shifts across the Kanwad Mela area, parking zones and other locations. Their work will be monitored by sanitation inspectors and supervisors, who will also be stationed 24/7. The agency concerned has also been instructed to ensure timely waste collection and transportation during the Yatra period,” he said. Besides this, the corporation has also procured pesticides and other cleaning equipment to maintain hygiene throughout the Yatra period. Considering the risk of vector-borne diseases, the corporation has also purchased 60 additional spray machines. The commissioner said that the corporation will also establish temporary offices at important sites like Pantdeep, Chamgadar Tapu and Bairagi Camp among others. These offices will have municipal officials and employees available 24/7 to address any issues related to the Kanwad pilgrims or the corporation’s works. Chaudhary said that the corporation has deployed additional vehicles and manpower and also prepared a route chart for easy movement. Around 110 vehicles will also be operational in three shifts for efficient waste management. Besides this, the sanitation team will also carry out continuous fogging and spraying of pesticides in the Kanwad Mela area and other associated places. Chaudhary said that the corporation has also publicised its contact numbers and set up a control room to ensure people can get help in all issues related to the corporation’s works.
