The Municipal Corporation of Haridwar (MCH) will operate garbage collection vehicles at night in city markets during Deepawali. The decision was taken during a meeting held on Wednesday by the Haridwar municipal commissioner Nandan Kumar with sanitation inspectors and environment volunteers to review the city’s cleanliness arrangements ahead of the festival. Kumar directed that sanitation work in all 60 wards and markets be maintained in both shifts.

He instructed that additional staff be deployed immediately in areas requiring support. All sanitation inspectors must personally inspect each ward and major market to ensure proper cleanliness. The commissioner warned that officials and staff found negligent will face strict action. Kumar instructed that garbage vehicles operate at night and before market opening to address difficulties in daytime garbage collection in markets. He also ordered special cleaning of drains across the city and fogging to control mosquitoes and disease spread.

He said that respective officers will enforce fines on individuals who litter in public spaces. Kumar appealed to citizens to cooperate with the municipal corporation by keeping their homes and surroundings clean and using designated garbage disposal sites. He emphasised that cleanliness is a collective responsibility. He stated that the corporation will monitor sanitation activities throughout the festival period to ensure uninterrupted garbage management in the city.
