The Municipal Corporation of Rishikesh (MCR) organised an extensive cleanliness drive across prominent city streets, rivers and riverbanks on Saturday and collected 1,320 kilogrammes of garbage. The Rishikesh municipal commissioner Shailendra Negi said that the celebrations also included a seminar at the corporation’s auditorium, where a software engineer and teacher at the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visually Disabilities (NIEPVD) Amit Singh Negi was invited as the keynote speaker. Despite losing his eyesight in an accident, Negi has been a prominent advocate for empowering visually impaired youth and has dedicated his work to skill development programmes tailored for them. In his speech, he emphasised the need to include persons with disabilities in Uttarakhand’s growth story and urged society to work inclusively toward the state’s development. Negi said that over 45 schools, along with various social organisations, participated in the cleanliness drive. He stated that MCR will continue to collaborate with schools and social organisations on similar initiatives to fulfill the goals of the Swachh Bharat Mission and the national clean air programme. These ongoing efforts aim to protect Rishikesh’s rich heritage and uphold its dignity, he added.
