MCR ready to start biomining of legacy waste of 40 years

The Municipal Corporation of Rishikesh (MCR) will soon commence the biomining of legacy waste piled up at the dumping site in Govind Nagar area since the last 40 years.

According to tax and revenue superintendent of the corporation, Ramesh Rawat, there is about 2.71 lakh cubic metres of legacy waste accumulated in the dumping site of Govind Nagar. He asserted that biomining is the best technique for the effective disposal of legacy waste as it is not easy to dispose of the garbage of over four decades efficiently. He informed that the garbage of 40 years is spread across four hectare land of the dumping site in Govind Nagar. The biomining of the accumulated garbage will be done under the public-private partnership (PPP) and most of the process has been completed by the corporation, said Rawat. “We have already got the approval of the State Government last year in December and after completing all the formalities this week, we will commence the biomining process of legacy waste after one week,” said Rawat.

However, he also pointed out that since legacy waste is not easy to dispose within a few weeks, this project can take at least five to six months or more for proper disposal. “We will treat every bit of the accumulated garbage at the dumping site as per the procedure whether it is rubber, metal, glass, plastic or fibre. Also, Rishikesh would be the first city to use biomining to dispose of legacy waste in Uttarakhand,” said Rawat.
