The Municipal Corporation of Rishikesh (MCR) has warned all locals to take their abandoned cattle back to their homes within a week. The authorities will take strict action against those whose cattle are found abandoned on the streets. The Rishikesh municipal commissioner Shailendra Singh Negi said that the corporation has been working on improving sanitation conditions of the city but abandoned cattle on the streets make the condition worse. Many cattle search for food in accumulated garbage and spread it all around the place.
Many also consume plastic and other toxic materials in the process of finding food. Besides this, these abandoned cattle also cause accidents on roads that injure people as well as themselves. He said that people leave cattle on roads, especially cows after they either get old or catch some disease and bulls as they are not considered to be of any use in urban areas. Despite raising awareness about the issue among locals, the number of stray cattle is consistently rising in the city.
Considering this, MCR has decided to take strict action against such offenders. Negi said that the corporation has asked all locals to take their abandoned cattle back to their homes within a week or a penalty of at least Rs 5,000 will be imposed on each offender. The authorities will act under the Animal Cruelty Act against those whose cattle will be found on the streets again. The corporation will identify the owners with the help of the ear tags of cattle. Besides this, the recently installed CCTV cameras in 20 locations will also help them to identify people who abandoned their cattle, he added.
