The Municipal Corporation of Rishikesh (MCR) is set to launch a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (RRR) van aimed at collecting clothes, books, stationery, electronics and other reusable items from all wards in Rishikesh. These items will be distributed to those in need, the Rishikesh municipal commissioner Shailendra Singh Negi said. He informed that in addition to the RRR van, MCR will also install collection stalls at public places like the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) and railway stations, among other locations. “People often discard items that can still be used multiple times, opting to buy new ones instead. This behaviour not only leads to unnecessary waste but also clutters roads and landfills,” Negi said.
The commissioner explained that the RRR initiative aims to ensure that these reusable items reach people who need them most. The corporation, along with its partner agencies, will collect items via the van or from stalls at public spaces. The collected items will then be distributed to people in slums, market areas, bus terminals and railway stations by evening on the same day. He said that MCR is also establishing a permanent collection point, Muskan Centre in its premises, where residents can donate items they no longer use. Items that cannot be distributed immediately will be stored at the centre for future distribution.
Negi added that the RRR initiative, which started about four months ago, has already helped at least 100 families. “We have mostly received school uniforms, textbooks and other clothes so far. The uniforms and textbooks were donated by several parents after new classes started in April. They helped children of several families. With the introduction of this initiative at a bigger level, we hope to extend our reach and assist more residents of Rishikesh while ensuring consistent improvement in the sanitation conditions,” he said.
