The Mussoorie-Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) has implemented several initiatives focused on water conservation and environmental management in Dehradun, including pond construction in Miyawala, a new reservoir in Gaura Devi park and rainwater harvesting systems in government schools.
According to MDDA vice chairman Banshidhar Tiwari, the authority is working in alignment with the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s directions to revive natural water sources and ensure balanced development in urban areas without compromising natural resources.
He stated that in Miyawala, a pond is being constructed near the government inter college to collect and store rainwater. This pond is expected to support groundwater recharge and offer long-term water access for local residents and farmers. He informed that a reservoir based on the ISIS model has been constructed in the Gaura Devi Park campus. It has been developed to collect rainwater and help maintain greenery in the park area. Plans are also in place to use this location for environmental education in the future, he said.
Tiwari informed that rainwater harvesting systems are also being installed in several government schools in Dehradun. These systems aim to promote water conservation within school premises and raise awareness among students about water security. Tiwari stated that large-scale tree plantation will be carried out around the Miyawala pond to enhance green cover and support biodiversity in the area. He said that these steps are part of a wider effort to maintain ecological balance and improve local climatic conditions.
Tiwari stated that Dhami has called upon all departments to prioritise water conservation efforts as water is a critical resource, especially in a Himalayan state like Uttarakhand and every effort must be made to preserve it. He has also urged the public to participate in these initiatives and contribute to water conservation and environmental awareness at their level.
