The eligibility criterion for the Nanda Gaura Yojana came under attack from the opposition members on Wednesday during the third day of the budget session of the Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha. They wanted the government to keep the family income as the sole criteria of eligibility for the scheme under which a sum of Rs 11,000 is given by the government on the birth of a girl child and Rs 51,000 on passing the class XII examination. In response to a question of BJP MLA Pritam Singh Panwar, women empowerment and child development minister Rekha Arya said that a total of 39,465 and 44,430 applications were received by the department in the years 2023-24 and 2022-23 respectively. In response to the supplementary questions of Congress MLA Pritam Singh and Bhuwan Kapdi the minister said that the girls studying in the government schools whose family income is less than Rs 6,000 per month are considered for the scheme. She added that the girls studying under Right to Education (RTE) in the private schools are also eligible provided their family income is less than Rs 6,000 per month. The BJP MLA Pramod Nainwal said that the entire process of application for the scheme is online and in which more than 22 certificates are needed to be uploaded. The certificates which are needed include PAN card of mother and father, income certificate, electricity and water bills. He demanded that the application process should be simplified. The minister said that the government endeavours to provide the benefit of the Nanda Gaura scheme to every beneficiary.
