Met department issues red alert of heavy rain for 72 hours from Saturday

The Meteorological department of Uttarakhand warned that the State may witness peak pre-monsoon rainfall for four days since June 23.  It has issued red alert of very heavy to extremely heavy shower accompanied by thunder/lightning and gusty winds for several parts of the State for three days from June 24. Besides, it has issued orange alert for Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Tehri, Nainital, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts and said that heavy rain may lash isolated places in these districts. Besides, yellow alert has been issued for Udham Singh Nagar, Pauri, Champawat and Haridwar districts for June 23.

The director, Met department Uttarakhand Vikram Singh said that a large swathe of the State from the hills to the plains might witness very heavy to extremely heavy shower accompanied by thunder and lightning. Gusty wind with speed of 40 kmph may sweep over the State. Issuing an advisory, he said that the water level of the rivers might rise and advised the people residing on the riverside to be on their guard.  At the same time, he alerted the flood management control department.  Singh also warned of the possibility light to moderate landslides in the vulnerable areas.

The State Met officer said that these spells of rain would usher in the monsoon season and then the monsoon will become fully active across the State.
