Minister lauds 33 % reservation for women in cooperative bodies

Welcoming the decision to provide 33 per cent reservation to the women in cooperative bodies and banks, the Cooperation minister Dhan Singh Rawat said that the measure will help in increasing transparency and authenticity in the operation of cooperatives in the State. The State cabinet in its meeting held on Saturday had approved the proposal to provide reservation to women in cooperative bodies. The minister said that Uttarakhand has become the first State in the country to have 33 per cent reservation in cooperative bodies.
He said that the problem of the dominance of single families in the operation of cooperative bodies has been solved and many measures to make them more inclusive and judicious have been taken.
The minister added that women have historically got less representation in the leadership roles in cooperatives. He said that it is necessary to have women in the board of directors and chairperson in the cooperative bodies in the State. The minister said that the decision to provide 33 per cent reservation will help in increasing awareness and credibility of the cooperatives among women.
There are 10 district cooperative banks, apex cooperative body and 670 Multipurpose Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies in the State.
