The body of a woman who was buried in snow after a piece of a glacier broke away on the route to Hemkund Sahib was recovered on Monday morning. The woman was part of a group of pilgrims returning from Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara on Sunday evening when it was hit by a piece of glacier which broke away from its main body at Atlakoti.
The State Disaster Response Force, police and Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel had conducted a rescue operation following which three women and two men were safely rescued while one woman could not be traced. After continuing the search and rescue effort to trace her in vain till Sunday night, the personnel resumed the search on Monday morning. After considerable efforts, the team managed to find the body of Kamaljeet Kaur (37) from Amritsar in Punjab. The body was found buried in a crevice under a thick cover of snow.
The personnel retrieved the body and handed it over for further action to the district police. Meanwhile, the pilgrimage to Hemkund Sahib was undertaken for about an hour only on Monday. Labourers of the Public Works Department also worked on clearing snow from the bridle path. There was some delay in starting the pilgrimage on Monday to prevent hindrance in the search operation and also as there was a glacier on the path.
