The increasing number of mobile phones and rising number of youngsters playing games on them, gaming disorder and addiction are increasing especially among the youngsters. The unchecked gaming hours of the youngsters are exerting a negative impact on various aspects of their lives, state experts.
Parents state that the screen time of kids must be strictly monitored. Students should be kept busy and pushed in other directions, like sports, extracurricular activities and developing new hobbies. Noted consultant psychiatrist Dr Nand Kishore said, “This is the era of the mobile phone addiction pandemic where we are highly dependent on screens. It is an issue with all age groups. We get so physically and psychologically involved in games that it exhausts our minds, takes away our concentration and in return gives us irritability, short temper, impatience and low tolerance. We get cut off from family and our social circle, neglect our work and become introverted. The unhealthy competition in games makes users feel inferior and depressed.”
He said that depression is the second most common disorder nowadays and gaming disorder may lead it towards suicide attempts. To prevent and overcome it there should be awareness programmes in schools and the media should focus on mental health-oriented programmes. The parents need to be in control and create a healthy environment for kids, by giving them love, affection, room to communicate and they need to control their own screen time as well.
