Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Shehbaz Shariff on his second term as the Prime Minister of Pakistan. In his congratulatory message on X, Modi said India desires peace and stability with her neighbour. Notably, after the ouster of the cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan, Shariff who is the younger brother of the three- time PM Nawaj Shariff became the PM in April 2022 and stayed put in the post till August 2023. His election is mired in controversy as his detractors allege vote rigging in his favour. Though his party Pakistan Muslim League did not secure a majority in the violence- marred general election other parties threw their weight behind him, thus paving the way for his swearing–in as the Prime Minister for the second term
