Mother & daughter, more than half a dozen animals killed by landslide debris in Tehri village

A woman and her daughter died in their sleep after landslide debris buried their home in Toli village of Budhakedar area of Tehri district on Friday night. One home and six cowsheds were damaged by the landslide resulting from a cloudburst in the area. Apart from the two people, three buffaloes, two calves, two cows and two dogs also died in the disaster.

According to officials, the disaster struck at about 1:30 AM on Saturday. Teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Police, Revenue and Health departments were sent to the site. The teams began the rescue operation and ascertained that debris of the CC route above the home had caused the damage. The teams retrieved bodies of Sarita Devi (36) and her daughter Ankita (15) from the debris. An injured man was also rescued from the site and sent to the primary health centre at Beleshwar after primary treatment. The local administration presented cheques of Rs four lakh each as ex-gratia to the bereaved family in addition to a cheque for Rs 1.35 lakh for the damage caused to the home.

Tehri district magistrate Mayor Dikshit visited the village and checked the situation. He directed the officials to ascertain the extent of the damage caused by the disaster and provide compensation as per the rules.
