All 118 patients admitted in AIIMS Rishikesh had history of diabetes

The experts of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh have warned that the Covid -19 patients suffering from the diabetes who are in the 40 to 60 years of age group have higher chances of catching the Mucormycosis (Black fungus) disease. A total of 118 patients of Mucormycosis have so far arrived in the AIIMS Rishikesh out of whom 66 are male while 42 females. Incidentally the medical history of all 118 patients suggests that they had diabetes.

The Director of AIIMS Rishikesh, Dr Ravikant said that people between the ages of 40 to 60 years who are either suffering from diabetes or have a high probability of developing diabetes and if they were administered high amounts of steroid during treatment  of Covid 19, then the fungus of Mucormycosis develops rapidly in such patients. He said that it is very important to keep control over the sugar level of these patients during treatment of Covid 19.

The ENT Surgeon of AIIMS- Rishikesh and head of the team of doctors treating Mucormycosis, Dr Amit Tyagi said Covid 19 patients should not consume steroids without medical advice.  “Use of steroids without medical advice can be fatal in terms of fungal infection. Apart from this, the Covid patients should check their sugar level daily till the next 6 weeks after recovery. If the sugar level increases, it is necessary to immediately consult a specialist,’’ he said.

The specialists suggest that steroid use should only be after the advice of the doctor and the Covid-19 patients and those who have recovered from the disease should avoid visiting dusty places. Such patients should also use masks in houses and avoid engaging in gardening activity to minimise chances of fungal infection.
