Naini lake water level falling alarmingly

Saturday, 06 April 2024 | PNS | NAINITAL

In latest news from Uttarakhand, with the onset of summer in Nainital, the level of water in the Naini lake-deemed to be lifeline of the town-has started falling, triggering fear of water scarcity.

As the mercury keeps rising, deltas are being formed in the lake with the water level sinking.

At present, the water level stands at three feet 10.50 inches whereas last year at this time it was five feet six inches.  This time, due to scanty or no snowfall in winter and no rain for a long time, most of the water sources spread across the town are on the verge of drying up.

Those in the know of things said that a drop of two to three inches is being recorded in the water level of Naini lake daily. If this rate persists acute water shortage might plague the locals as well as tourists in the coming days, said an irrigation department officer.
