District magistrate Savin Bansal, along with chief development officer Abhinav Shah formally launched the Nanda-Sunanda project in the district by distributing a cheque for a total of Rs 2,44,731 to seven girls on Saturday. The purpose of the Nanda-Sunanda project is to enhance the educational opportunities for girls. A multi-disciplinary committee has been formed to ensure that the selection process is fair, transparent and genuine.

Under the Nanda- Sunanda project and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme, financial assistance was provided to seven girls including Roshni, Ronak, Shashank, Meena, Akansh, Mansi Sahu and Vidhi who come from challenging backgrounds. These girls were chosen for support due to their difficult circumstances and to enable them to pursue higher education and skill development training to become self-reliant.

During the event, the girls shared their aspirations with the DM. Bansal expressed interest in their dreams and reassured them that the district administration would offer all possible help to realise those dreams. He also thanked the CDO and DPO (ICDS) for their cooperation in this initiative.

Bansal explained that the Nanda-Sunanda project aims to educate poor, orphaned and helpless girls in the district up to the higher education level and connect them with employment opportunities through skill education. An action plan has been established to ensure that these girls receive education at least up to the graduation level. The selection of girls for the project will take place during Janta Darbar and multipurpose camps, based on applications received through various government offices in the district, as well as from girls’ homes overseen by the district probation officer and district social welfare officer. Additionally, surveys conducted by Anganwadi workers will be utilised for selection, he said.

It will be recalled that Bansal has previously implemented this project during his tenure as the DM in Nainital where 60 girls benefitted from it.
