National athletic championship to promote sports

Uttarakhand performed well in the two-day Yuvrani Mahendrakumari 18th National Athletic Championship that concluded with prize distribution and felicitation ceremony. In the championship, the players representing the State won 18 gold, 15 silver and 15 bronze medals. Apart from this, Darshan Singh who also hails from the State won gold in the 90 plus category in javelin throw, discus throw and shot put.
A sports enthusiast and the State Congress Commenting vice president Suryakant Dhasmana said that this championship was the stepping stone towards hosting such competition at the international level. “It was indeed a pleasant experience to witness a 106-year-old Haryana sportsperson, Rama Bai along with her daughter Sunita and her sister-in-law Sharmila participating in the competition enthusiastically and winning medals. Besides, such events inspire the budding players.”
The president of Uttarakhand Cricket Board Jot Singh Gunsola said that Uttarakhand has produced a galaxy of football and cricket players over the years who have excelled nationally and internationally and now the State’s progress in the arena of cricket is really remarkable. “Such national level sports competition being hosted by the State furthers the cause of sports and encourages the budding sports talents,” he added.
