National Lok Adalat to be held on March 9

Friday, 16 February 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The Uttarakhand State Legal Services Authority (SLSA) will organise National Lok Adalat in all districts on March 9 under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority (NLSA) to settle pending cases in court. The officials said that Lok Adalats are organised by legal services institutions to reduce the pendency of cases in courts and also to settle disputes at the pre-litigation stage. The disputes and cases pending in the court or at pre- litigation stage are settled or compromised amicably in a Lok Adalat. They said that it is primarily a people’s court wherein decisions are arrived at between two or more disputing parties on mutually acceptable terms amicably. Under the Legal Services Authorities (LSA) Act, 1987, an award made by a Lok Adalat is deemed to be a decree of a civil court and is final and binding on all parties and no appeal can be made against it in any court.

The officials informed that civil suits like money recovery, property and matrimonial among others will be settled in Lok Adalat on March 9 on the basis of a mutual settlement agreement in which there is also a provision for refund of court fees. Pre-litigation cases related to electricity, water, insurance and banking will also be resolved on Lok Adalat. Besides this, all types of compoundable criminal cases and cheque bounce cases will also be resolved on the basis of the conciliation agreement in Lok Adalat. The SLSA has also instructed the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) of all 13 districts to hold meetings with banks, police, insurance companies, regional transport offices and other bodies concerned to ensure maximum participation of people on March 9 for the successful operation of Lok Adalat in their respective districts.
