The National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) will summon a meeting with all the district magistrates in Uttarakhand to discuss the mapping of unregistered Madarsas in the State. The chairman of NCPCR, Priyank Kanoongo shared this information during a Press conference held here on Monday.
Addressing the media, Kanoongo said that he had traveled to Dehradun to hold discussions on the current status of the implementation of laws concerning children with the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) and other departments concerned. Prior to the scheduled meeting, he and his team conducted a surprise inspection at two Madarsas in Dehradun. The inspection revealed that many children, particularly from States like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, were studying there. Additionally, one of the Madarsas was found to be indulging in anomalies in charging fees from its students. In response to these findings, the Education department has been instructed to investigate all Madarsas in Dehradun regarding their affiliation status within the next 15 days. Kanoongo also warned that if the relevant departments fail to take action on unregistered Madrasas in the State, the NCPCR will implement strict measures. He also stressed the need to promptly convene a meeting with the district magistrates of the State to address the issue of Madarsas.
He further informed that during the meeting SCPCR and representatives from 14 government departments, the officials highlighted numerous child-related initiatives. He commended the efforts of the Women Empowerment and Child Development department in particular. The head of the NCPCR noted the low enrollment of children with disabilities in educational institutions compared to the government’s disability screening statistics. Consequently, he instructed the Education department to monitor and improve the enrollment of disabled children in both private and public schools, in addition to providing home-based education for them. He also stressed on the need for specific initiatives to assist homeless street children in Uttarakhand.
