The chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW) Rekha Sharma has directed the Director General of Police (DGP) of Uttarakhand, Ashok Kumar to share the information of all women empowerment programmes run by the police department with the State commission for women (SCW). She also asked Kumar to conduct regular meetings with the officials of the commission. Sharma, who was recently given a three-year extension as the chairperson of NCW by the Central Government earlier this month, said this during a meeting at Bijapur Guest House with the senior officials of the police department and state commission for women.

In the meeting, Sharma also inquired about the complaints lodged by women in the State throughout the year responding to which, the DGP said that 25 per cent of the total complaints registered across the State are from women. He said that the police have taken immediate action against such complaints throughout the year. He informed the NCW chairperson that every police station has three to four women police officers so that women do not feel uncomfortable while filing complaints.

However, Sharma asserted that police must involve the SCW in its women empowerment programmes. She said that police should also participate in the meeting with the State commission  for women here to strengthen the system so that the officials can easily reach the grievances of the women complainants. After the meeting, Sharma reached Raj Bhawan to meet the governor Baby Rani Maurya to discuss about strengthening the status of women in Uttarakhand. A review of the work done by the commission for women was also undertaken.
