The Uttarakhand police have so far undertaken the physical verification of 9,828 persons till Friday in the state as part of the campaign started on April 21. The verification campaign was started in view of the Char Dham Yatra about to start next month and ensuring law and order in the state. The campaign is being undertaken to verify those living and working in Uttarakhand for the past 10 years, street vendors and tenants among others. During the verification campaign, out of the 454 suspicious persons noticed, action was taken under the Police Act against 402 persons while other preventive action was taken against 52 persons.
It is pertinent to mention here that recently a member of the religious fraternity had demanded that non-Hindus be prohibited from the Char Dham circuit. This was around the time when violent incidents took place at a village in Haridwar district and some other parts of India. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had then stressed that unwanted elements will not be allowed to disrupt the peace in Uttarakhand. Stressing on the need for preserving the State’s culture and maintaining peace, Dhami had announced the verification campaign in the state to sift out mischievous elements.
