Need to nurture trees instead of just planting saplings, say citizens

Calling for more focus on nurturing trees, most citizens opined that the government needs to ensure the trees survive rather than simply planting them. People said this after the tree plantation done by the many officials on the occasion of the Harela festival. However, experts point out that it is not merely the responsibility of the government to nurture the trees as every individual is and always be responsible for focusing on sustaining the trees. Trees play a very important role in a healthy environment and saving them is the responsibility of every individual, stated experts.

Local resident Rajeev Rai said, “Every year the State government plants saplings on the occasion of Harela. However, after that the government appears least bothered about their sustainability. So, I would suggest the government should ensure preservation of the trees it plants.”

Founder of Maiti Andoldan Kalyan Singh Rawat told this correspondent, “The government shouldn’t just plant the trees but also ensure they have a long life. Take a look at considerable development which has taken place at the cost of the green cover during the past years in the State. If there is a healthy environment, there is no need to plant trees. If the government is planting the tree then it must also understand the value of preserving and protecting them for a long time. Apart from this, it is not only the responsibility of the government to sustain the trees but also of the local citizens.”

Expressing his views, former director of the Horticulture department BS Negi said, “Are the people who are claiming that the government should be responsible for the trees themselves responsible too? Sustaining trees is not just the responsibility of the government. Every individual is responsible for nurturing the trees in the State.”
