In latest Uttarakhand news, in the aftermath of the uproar triggered by the viral video purportedly showing a woman asking for liquor in a shop near Kedarnath shrine, Special Operation Group team under direction of senior police officers held two Nepalese nationals from Kaakda Gaad area with four boxes containing 48 bottles of liquor. At the same time, Ukhimath police team during checking nabbed two persons of Nepalese origin with 30 bottles of liquor hidden in two trolley bags. Cases were registered by Ukhimath police under relevant sections of the State’s excise act. Police said the accused have been produced at the court. During interrogation, the accused are understood to have said that they were taking the liquor to the pilgrimage route to sell them at higher prices. Police further said that the centres of the liquor smuggling are Basukedar and Kaakda Gaad areas.
However, the people say that the excise department should get into the root of the menace of liquor smuggling and sale in and around the shrines and arresting a few people of Nepalese origin amounts to mere eyewash.
