Academy will work in the field of conservation, promotion, development, extension, translation and research in Nepali language

The Uttarakhand government has decided to set up Nepali Academy to promote and conserve the Nepali language in the State. The government has given an in- principle acceptance to the proposal to the establishment of the academy and for it an amendment bill in the Uttarakhand Bhasha Sansthan Act 2018 will be tabled in the Assembly soon. The Nepali Academy will be the fifth academy in the State and would help in protecting the language in the State.
Uttarakhand already has a Hindi Academy (set up in February 2010), Urdu Academy and Punjabi academy (both established in July 2013) and Uttarakhand Lok Bhasha and Boli Academy ( August 2016). The secretary, Language, Vinod Kumar Raturi confirmed that the government has given its approval to the proposal to set up the Nepali Academy in the State. He told The Pioneer that Nepali language is in the eighth schedule of the constitution and it will help in promotion and conservation of the language in the State. The Nepali academy will be mandated to work in the field of conservation, promotion, development, extension, translation and research in the Nepali language.
As per the census data of the year 2011, Uttarakhand has a population of 1,06,399 of the persons of Nepal origin. The State has the fourth highest number of Nepali speaking people in the country after West Bengal, Assam and Sikkim. Expressing happiness at the decision of the Uttarakhand government to set up a Nepali Academy, the president of Gorkha International, an organisation engaged in social work, Sanjay Mall said that the academy will help in conserving the Nepali language in the State. The academy will also help in forging better relations with Nepal which is an old friend of India.
