The director of the Culture department Beena Bhatt said that the State government is considering opening an art gallery to promote the fine arts and culture of the State. She said that the new art gallery being considered by the State government will include features like a spacious auditorium.

Bhatt told The Pioneer, “The State government and the Culture development are considering opening the new art gallery in Dehradun which will be different from the existing art gallery. It will include features like an auditorium, theatre and other cultural elements. The new art gallery will have a separate committee to resolve any issue regarding the maintenance of the art gallery at the initial level.”

Meanwhile, the existing art gallery- Uttara Contemporary Art Gallery (UCAG) located near the Clock Tower in Dehradun is currently facing some issues, according to its in-charge Sangeeta Sureri.

Sureri said, “We face a shortage of staff and lack an artist to maintain the paintings. We have sent a proposal to the Culture department to look into the issues.”

Regarding this Bhatt said, “There is no need to increase the staff at UCAG as it is used for exhibitions and selling paintings. However, the department treats its maintenance as a priority. The government will consider the proposal of a separate committee at UCAG.”
