NGT committee on Mussoorie holds first meeting

Chief secretary SS Sandhu presided over the first meeting of the nine-member committee formed by National Green Tribunal (NGT) regarding the carrying capacity and safety measures for Mussoorie here on Monday. Discussions were held in the meeting on studying the safety measures for the Himalayan areas of Mussoorie, vehicle-traffic management, accommodation, flora-fauna and carrying capacity of environmentally sensitive areas among other issues. It was informed in the meeting that in the recent past various institutions have conducted some studies on the Mussoorie region. The chief secretary directed all members of the committee to make presentations on all the studies conducted by them at their level. It was also decided that all the reports prepared on Mussoorie so far will be compiled into a report by the GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment. Sandhu said that reports on all types of studies sought by the NGT should be completed within the stipulated time frame. All the institutions under the committee should appoint nodal officers for this purpose, he said.

Supreme Court monitoring committee member secretary MC Ghildiyal, principal secretary RK Sudhanshu along with officials of Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Uttarakhand Space Application Centre, Uttarakhand Environment Protection and Pollution Control Board among others were also present in the meeting.
