In an important development, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) ordered the Uttarakhand government to raze down all the structures standing illegally on the flood zone of Rispana river.  It made it clear that no permanent structure would be allowed to stand in this area and hence such structures must be demolished. With this order, the sword of demolition hangs over about 525 unauthorised houses built in the flood zone. Earlier, 27 such structures were identified for demolition by the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun and Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority.  This aside, nine more structures reportedly stand on encroached land owned by the State government.

A few of these structures had already been razed down but the anti-encroachment drive got stuck due to opposition and litigation.

As per the NGT order, the State government will have to send a report to the green watchdog by February 13, detailing the status of encroachment, anti-encroachment operations to be conducted by the State government and the pollution control measures taken by the State government.
