Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami flagged off an expedition of the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) to 11 hitherto unclimbed and unnamed mountain peaks near the Mana pass area of Chamoli district on Saturday.
The expedition will end on August 15 and as per the NIM its objective is to establish new dimensions in the field of mountaineering and to pay tribute to the brave mountaineers of the advanced mountaineering course who had lost their lives in the Draupadi Ka Danda peak tragedy last year.
The NIM officials said that out of 11 peaks, five are more than 6,000 metres high and the remaining six are more than 5,500 metres high. The NIM will name these peaks after the climbers who died in the Draupadi ka Danda tragedy.
NIM principal colonel Anshuman Bhadoria is leading the expedition while the vice principal and medical officer of the institute, captain Santosh Kumar is the deputy leader.
